Bark WRITING

A sample set of reactive character barks written for Project ZR, a team-based extraction/BR game. These lines were designed to reflect character voice, reinforce gameplay goals, and create emotional beats during high-stakes combat.

Goals for this bark system:

• Communicate key gameplay states (objectives, success/failure, threats, etc.)

• Reinforce character personalities through line delivery

• Minimize repetition fatigue by offering line variety and modularity

• Contribute to tone: Tomoe is dry, tactical, and deadpan; Nova is excitable, chaotic, and emotionally expressive

System Considerations:

• Lines needed to be under ~3 seconds for VO feasibility

• Modular enough to allow batching by event type and priority

• Designed for a four-player co-op environment

• Avoided heavy lore exposition to keep lines punchy during gameplay

Examples of Bark Categories Included:

• Objective setup ("Kill the dragon, retrieve the Anchor")

• Success/failure state (“Anchor secured,” “They got the Anchor”)

• Urgent escape cues (“The world is collapsing”)

• Victory screen chatter

• Combat zone entry (“Too much Anomaly presence here”)

Bonus video of Tomoe and Nova actors in the booth:

OBJECTIVE SETUP

TOMOE:

Take the dragon down. Get the Anchor.

That dragon won’t go down easy.

Everybody else is gunning for that dragon. Stay sharp.

SUCCESS STATE

TOMOE:

Got the Anchor! Let’s get out of here fast!

I have the Anchor! Everybody move!

Anchor secured! Get to the exit!

FAILURE STATE

TOMOE:

We’re out of time. Get out now!

The Anchor’s gone. We need to leave!

They got the Anchor out. Evac, now!

VICTORY SCREEN CHATTER

TOMOE:

Nice hustle back there.

Hey, good job saving the world.

Teamwork makes the dream work.

AREA START - MISSION CLARITY

TOMOE:

Remember: we kill this dragon, we get the Anchor, we go.

Eyes sharp. In, out, no mistakes.

Game plan, team: kill dragon, retriever the Anchor, and get out. Easy and clean.

ANOMALY COMMENTS

TOMOE:

Too much Anomaly influence here. Let’s drive it back.

We need to reclaim this area from the Anomaly.

Anomaly's thick here. Cut through it.

NOVA:

Slay a dragon? How hard could it be?

Look, I know a LOT about killing dragons. Hypothetically.

Dragon’s basically toast already.

NOVA:

Got the Anchor! Watch my back, I’m squishy!

Okay! I have the… thing! Now we leave, right?

I have the Anchor and I am headin’ out!

NOVA:

Welp. That’s not good. We better get out!

Okay, no Anchor for us, but I do still like living, soooo…

Um, nobody freak out, but this rift is collapsing. Maybe we run?

NOVA:

We really made magic together, huh?

I swear spells are easier to cast with a team this good!

That was amazing! Especially me. But you guys too!

NOVA:

So we just gotta find this dragon, yank its heart out, and run? Easy!

We’re gonna want to find this dragon before it finds us.

Eyes open for dragons with magical glowing hearts we can steal!

NOVA:

Time to blow up some Anomaly creeps!

Too much Anomaly here for my taste.

These Anomaly dudes are gross. Let’s explode ‘em.
